America at the Dawn of the Automotive Era

At the very beginning of the 20th century, most American roads remained dirt or were paved with stone and brick. The smooth asphalt that is familiar to us today was rare and found only on the main streets of large cities. Beyond those streets, the roads were uneven, washed out by rain and time, and every trip could turn into a real challenge.

Automobiles that had appeared on the streets since the late 19th century had not yet become a common sight. Their presence often drew the attention of passersby, and traveling by car was seen as a rarity and a novelty.

Interesting fact: In 1900, only about 8,000 automobiles were registered in the United States.

When Cars Entered People’s Lives

Cars began to appear more and more often on the streets and in the suburbs of the early 20th century. Their roar caught the attention of city residents. Some stopped to see who was behind the wheel, some instinctively stepped back from the sidewalk, and some simply could not believe their eyes. These first automobiles sparked surprise and curiosity.

Interesting fact: By 1910, the number of automobiles had grown to approximately 469,000, and small groups of owners were already forming to share experience and help one another.

For the first owners, automobiles were far from convenient. They broke down often, overheated, and required constant attention. Owners had to know how to fix the car themselves: tighten belts, lubricate mechanisms, check the engine after every use. Even driving around the city could require a stop for minor repairs, and long trips beyond the city turned into a true test. Each such journey gradually taught the driver to understand the capabilities and limitations of the automobile and opened up a new level of independence and freedom of movement.

Interesting fact: By 1915, there were already about 2.5 million automobiles in the United States, and new drivers were gradually turning this rare pastime into a mass phenomenon.

Luggage as an Extension of Life

Early automobiles gave people freedom of movement, but they also introduced new demands for organizing their belongings. Travelers took everything they needed with them: food, a change of clothes, tools, ropes, spare parts. For this, they used suitcases, trunks, and wooden crates, resembling modern storage for SUV, where every item had its own place. Luggage became an extension of the journey, its logic and its support.

The Birth of Order in Motion

Gradually, it became understood that order was not a luxury, but a necessity. The farther a person traveled from home, the more important careful organization of space became. This is how the first ideas of storage systems and pull out compartments appeared, which today we call SUV trunk drawers. At that time, they had no name, but they had a purpose: to reach the destination successfully and not get lost in one’s own belongings.

The Road and a Simple Meal

For early travelers, the ability to stop and regain strength was just as important. During long trips, they took canned food, sandwiches, a thermos with hot drinks, and other essential items so they could eat along the way. Simple food became a small event, and such stops formed the habit of planning a route and taking care of nourishment on the road.

It was from these early practices that the tradition of “living on the road” began to take shape. Today, this idea is embodied in the concept of the SUV kitchen: mobile, compact, and still closely tied to practicality and convenience while traveling.

People of a New Era

Everyone who sat behind the wheel in those years was a pioneer. He was not just driving, he was shaping the future. From this experience came the culture of long-distance travel, automobile clubs, competitions, and entire routes that would become legendary decades later.

America changed, became covered with a network of highways, and filled with millions of cars. But its automotive soul was born precisely then, when the road had not yet been drawn on the map, and the future lay where the wheel’s track came to an end.
